Subject: Master Newsletter 7/19/99
Purpose
The purpose of the MASTER newsletter is to keep interested individuals
informed on developments with the MASTER instrument. We are always happy to
answer more detailed questions if you have them.
Validation Update
An inflight validation experiment was held in December to validate the data
from the MASTER instrument when flown on the B200 aircraft. The experiment
involved flying MASTER over L. Meade and Ivanpah playa at 3 altitudes and
comparing the predicted instrument radiance from field measurements at the
overpass time to the MASTER radiance. Ports 1, 2 and 4 of the MASTER instrument
were validated corresponding to the VNIR, SWIR and TIR channels respectively.
The results were v. good, the VNIR-SWIR performance was comparable to AVIRIS and
in the TIR the predicted values for the 8 window channels agreed to better than
a few tenths of a degree. A full report is available on the web site under
validation. The MIR channels were not validated since they are still fairly
noisy. This should be addressed with the addition of a linear variable filter
later this year.
Data Ordering Update
Any data acquired by MASTER can now be ordered from the Distributed Active
Archive Center (DAAC). This is a v. simple process. Go to the MASTER website,
decide which flights you want to order, based on the quicklooks, and submit an
order online. You can order data on either CD or 8mm tape. There is a small cost
to avoid frivilous requests ($15 per tape; $10 per CD).
Acquisition Update
Thus far the following data sets have been acquired:
L Meade/Ivanpah (Dec 1998)
Salton Sea (Jan 99)
Baja (5-5-99)
Phoenix, AZ (6-5-99)
Silver Peak, NV (6-9-99)
Goldstone, CA (5-29-99)
Death Valley, CA (6-10-99)
Cuprite, NV (6-9-99)
Ray Mine, AZ (Day/night flts) (6-7&8-99)
Jornada Exper. Range and (6-1-99) Sevillita, NM (6-1&3-99)
Albuquerque/El Paso (6-3&4-99)
Mountain Pass (5-11-99)
The date in () indicates when acquisition was complete. The first 2 data sets
listed above can be ordered on-line and some of the third dataset. The other
data sets will be made available as soon as the data processing is complete.
Integration Update
MASTER has been integrated into the DC-8 and once a successful validation
experiment is completed will be declared operational on that platform. MASTER
will be deployed on the DC-8 in the upcoming PAC-RIM II experiment.
